One of the best parts about studying in Europe is the chance to travel. It’s so easy to travel between cities or even between countries. In fact, it’s easier to travel between countries in Europe than states in the United States. The hard part about traveling in Europe is packing for the weight restrictions on all the discount airlines. Of course these tips will change depending upon what time of year you are traveling in, but let’s say its end of spring. Start with your travel bag. Leather travel bags in neutrals that come with a clutch are best because they can do double duty. The clutch can start out as a make-up bag and then you can use it to go out at night, and the bag can become your travel tote for walking around your destination, especially if you waterproof it. The travel tote is perfect because then you have enough room for your guidebooks, wallet, etc. as well as room for purchases and maybe even a picnic!

Now that you have picked out your travel bag, the question is what to put in it. Start with your basic toiletries in your clutch; toothbrush, a brush/comb, concealer, eyeliner, and mascara. In a separate plastic bag toothpaste and maybe a little lotion. It is not necessary to bring ALL of the toiletries you have in your arsenal since they will just take up space. In your travel tote bag put anything you absolutely will need, like a pen, your phone, wallet, passport, etc. in the outside pockets.

The biggest mistake you can make while traveling is bringing too many pairs of the wrong shoes. You will need one pair of walking shoes and one pair of nice flats. If you really want to wear heels, bring kitten heels. In most cities in Europe either the streets are made out of cobblestones and/or you will be walking a lot so there is no point in bringing shoes that may be super cute, but uncomfortable. After the shoe debacle comes the easy part; all you need is one pair of jeans, one skirt, two or three neutral colored shirts, and one nicer outfit. Remember, you can always do laundry, even if it’s just in the sink. If you pick a neutral palate you’ll be set with mixing and matching your separates. Europe is all about neutrals with a random pop of color in scarves, which are also really easy to pack. Bring two or three and that will add variation to your outfit. You can wear one on the plane and put the others in your travel bag. If they don’t fit, tie one on the handle, which is also super chic.

Of course these travel tips can be used everywhere, but in especially in Europe. Simplicity is always key, and there is nothing more simple than making what you bring function in as many ways as possible, even your travel bag.
